What Is Technical SEO? A Plain-English Guide

Technical SEO refers to the website infrastructure and configuration that allows search engines to find, crawl, understand and index your pages. While content and backlinks determine what you rank for, technical SEO determines whether Google can access and properly evaluate your content in the first place. A technically sound website removes the obstacles between Google and your content.

For most small business websites built on modern platforms, the majority of technical SEO is handled adequately out of the box. But specific issues — crawl errors, duplicate content, slow page speed, missing canonical tags — can silently limit your rankings even when your content is excellent.

Crawlability and indexation

Before a page can rank, Google must be able to crawl and index it. Crawlability means Google's bots can access the page — not blocked by your robots.txt file, not behind a login, not blocked by JavaScript that prevents content from being rendered. Indexation means Google has decided to include the page in its index and can return it as a search result.

Common crawlability problems include incorrect robots.txt entries that accidentally block important pages, noindex tags left on pages from development that were never removed, and JavaScript-heavy pages whose content is not rendered correctly by Googlebot. Google Search Console's Coverage report is the primary tool for identifying indexation problems — checking it monthly is a straightforward maintenance habit.

Site structure, URLs and canonical tags

A clear site structure makes it easier for both users and Google to understand how your content is organised. Pages should be reachable within three clicks from the homepage. URLs should be short, descriptive and consistent — hyphens rather than underscores, no session parameters in the URL, no excessive depth (/services/web-design/ is preferable to /services/category/sub-category/web-design/).

Duplicate content — multiple URLs that serve the same or very similar content — is a common technical SEO problem. It arises from HTTP and HTTPS versions of pages coexisting, www and non-www versions, trailing slash and non-trailing-slash URL variants, and print-friendly page versions. Canonical tags (a link element in the HTML head) tell Google which version of a duplicate URL is the authoritative one. This is something your web developer should set up correctly, but it is worth knowing to ask about.

Page speed and Core Web Vitals

Page speed is a confirmed Google ranking factor. Slow pages that fail Core Web Vitals (the specific metrics Google measures for page experience) may rank below faster competitors when content quality is otherwise equal. The most common causes of slow pages for small business websites are unoptimised large images, too many third-party scripts (chatbots, tracking pixels, social media embeds), slow hosting servers, and unminified CSS and JavaScript files.
