Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Web Designer

A short conversation before you sign saves a lot of frustration after you do.

Choosing a web designer is a bit like hiring a builder. The work happens largely out of sight, the result lasts for years, and the gap between a good and a bad choice is huge. A few good questions upfront tell you most of what you need to know.

Here are the questions worth asking, and what a reassuring answer sounds like.

About the work

Ask to see recent examples, ideally for businesses like yours, and ask whether those sites are still live and performing. Anyone can show a pretty mock-up; a real, working site you can visit tells you far more.

Ask who actually does the work and whether anything is outsourced. There is nothing wrong with a small team or trusted partners, but you should know who you will be dealing with.

About the process

Ask how the project runs from start to finish, how long it takes, and what they need from you. A clear, confident answer signals someone who has done this many times; a fuzzy one is a warning.

Ask what happens if you want changes mid-project, and how feedback is handled. Knowing the process before you start prevents the most common source of friction.

About afterwards

Ask who owns the finished site and whether you can move it elsewhere later. You should never feel trapped. Ask too about support, updates and security once the site is live.

Finally, ask how they measure success. A designer who talks about enquiries, sales and rankings — not just how the site looks — is thinking about your business, which is exactly what you want.

FAQs

Common questions.

Should I always pick the cheapest quote?
No. Price matters, but a website is a long-term asset. Judge on examples, process, support and ownership as well as cost — the cheapest option often becomes the most expensive once you factor in rebuilds.
How do I know if a designer is reliable?
Look for genuine reviews, live client sites, clear written quotes and prompt, straight answers to your questions. Reliability shows up in the small things long before any work begins.
What should we ask about who will actually own the website once it is built?
It is important to confirm that you will own the domain, the hosting account, and the website files outright when the project is complete. We always transfer full ownership to our clients and make sure you can take your site elsewhere if you ever need to.
