How to Set Up and Verify Google Search Console
Google Search Console is a free tool that shows you how Google sees your website. It tells you which search queries your pages appear for, how many clicks you receive from organic search, whether Google has crawled and indexed your pages, and any technical errors that might be preventing your site from ranking. Every website owner serious about SEO should have it set up.
Before you can use Search Console, you need to add and verify your website — a process that proves to Google you own or manage the site in question. Google offers several verification methods to suit different levels of technical access.
Choosing Your Verification Method
Google offers five main verification methods. The HTML file method requires you to download a small HTML file from Search Console and upload it to your website's root directory. The HTML tag method lets you add a meta tag to the <head> section of your homepage. The DNS record method involves adding a TXT record to your domain through your domain registrar or DNS provider — this is the most reliable method because it does not depend on your website files.
If you already have Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager installed on your site, you can verify through those. Google Analytics verification requires that the GA tracking code is in the <head> section of your pages. Google Tag Manager verification requires that the GTM container snippet is installed correctly. Both of these are the fastest routes if the tools are already in place.
Adding Your Property in Search Console
Log into Google Search Console at search.google.com/search-console and click "Add property". You will be asked to choose between a Domain property and a URL prefix property. A Domain property covers all versions of your site — http, https, www, and non-www — under one umbrella. A URL prefix property covers only the specific URL you enter. Use a Domain property where possible; it gives you a complete picture of your search presence.
For a Domain property, you must verify via DNS record. Your registrar's control panel will have a DNS management section where you can add the TXT record Google provides. Changes typically propagate within a few minutes, though they can take up to 48 hours in rare cases. Once Google detects the record, verification is instant.
What to Do After Verification
Once verified, submit your XML sitemap. Click "Sitemaps" in the left-hand menu and enter the URL of your sitemap — usually yoursite.co.uk/sitemap.xml. This helps Google discover your pages faster. Then check the Index Coverage report to see which pages Google has indexed and whether any have errors preventing indexing.
It takes a few days to a few weeks for Search Console to populate meaningful data. Performance data — clicks, impressions, and average position from Google Search — is available once Google begins collecting it for your property. Check back after seven days and you should see your first data points appearing.
